Did you wash your hands? 07/11/2008

Everybody knows you should wash your hands before having a meal, after using the bathroom or handling pets, but do we always do it, and do we do a good job?

Tres Scott, our on-staff nurse, teaches a very informative class on handwashing. She puts the class participants to a test, asking them to rub a Glo Germ lotion on their hands, then to wash their hands, and finally to pass their hands under an ultraviolet light. Results are interesting, to say the least . Every spot missed during the handwashing glows under the UV light. After this fun exercise, she explains the proper way to wash your hands, and stresses how important this is to prevent spreading germs and diseases.

Everybody should take this class, as it applies to everyday situations.

Handwashing Tips:

  • Remove your ring and watch
  • Turn on the faucet
  • Using warm running water, wet hands thoroughly
  • Add soap and rub your hands together
  • Wash vigorously for 20 seconds
  • Wash the front and back of hands, between your fingers, under your nails, and your wrists
  • Rinse your hands well under warm running water
  • Dry hands with a clean paper towel, from the finger tips to the wrist
  • Turn off water with the used paper towel
